Debunking the 5 Most Common Home Insulation Myths and Misconceptions

May 31, 2019

Myths and misconceptions surrounding residential insulation often leave homeowners holding back on investing in improving their homes, even when improved insulation can reduce energy bills, improve your quality of life and much more.

To help break some of these myths, Georgian Insulation has created a list of five of the key misconceptions when it comes to improving your home’s insulation.

1 - It’s not possible to over insulate my home

If your home isn’t insulated properly then you will clearly be able to notice that your house is cold, isn’t able to sustain a level temperature and your energy bills are constantly increasing. Proper insulation is the answer, but that doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t over insulate your home.

In fact, an over insulated home will be too tightly sealed and air will have nowhere to go. This will result in a number of issues, including reduced indoor air quality, mold developing within your home and moisture developing in certain areas of your property.

2 - Insulation never needs replacing

While it’s true that insulation is created and installed for long-term use, it will eventually need replacing. Just like all the other materials and appliances in your house, insulation will sustain wear and tear over time and, as a result, will stop working at its optimum level.

Any insulation that has sustained damage or been dislodged, which can happen regularly in attics due to animals, should be replaced or your entire house will suffer.

Leaving damage or worn insulation within your home will lead to poor indoor air quality, higher heating and cooling costs throughout the year and inconsistent temperatures within your house.

3 - Insulation is just for new homes

Many homeowners believe that just because their house is older, either they already have sufficient insulation or that they’d need to completely rip out their walls to install new and modern insulation.

This simply isn’t true. All houses will need insulation upgrades over time and the building industry has developed great ways to install it without completely ripping the foundations of your home apart.

In fact, insulation such as blown cellulose and spray foam are either applied by being blown in or as a liquid, meaning they can reach difficult-to-install areas without damaging any part of your house.

4 - Insulation isn’t just for winter

Many people believe that insulation is just for winter. As a result, they wait for fall to upgrade their insulation. What many people don’t know, however, is that insulation keeps your home comfortable all-year-round.

By stopping the passage of heat by trapping air bubbles within the insulating material, insulation within your home helps to keep cooler temperatures within your walls and allows your HVAC system to continue running at an efficient rate.

So, if you are waiting to upgrade your insulation until fall - don’t! You can start saving money right now if you install new insulation straight away.

5 - Vermiculite insulation doesn’t need to be replaced

Vermiculite insulation was used for many years as home insulation. It was installed in attics and walls of thousands of homes in Canada and was believed to be safe and harmless.

However, several years ago, research discovered that some of the vermiculite contained low levels of asbestos - a naturally occurring mineral which has been proven to be carcinogenic to humans.

While vermiculite isn’t always dangerou and if left undisturbed can be perfectly safe within your home, living with asbestos in your home probably just isn’t worth the risk. If you believe you may have vermiculite insulation, you should contact a professional who will then be able to handle and remove any contaminated insulation from your home.
