6 Signs That Your House is Suffering From Excess Humidity

June 28, 2019

While summer may be taking it’s time to fully arrive here in Ontario, Canada, this year, the summer months can get incredibly hot and humid. It’s likely that your home is your place of refuge to cool down and get away from the heat.

But what happens when your Ontario home is consistently warm despite your best efforts to keep it cool?

While at first it may be easy enough to blame your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit, it could actually be the case that your home is suffering from excess humidity. This is not only leaving you feeling uncomfortable in your own home, but it’s also affecting your energy efficiency and leaving you paying more expensive bills each month.

There are a variety of signs that could prove your home is suffering from excess humidity, and Georgian Insulation has listed the six most common of those here:

1 - Condensation on your windows

If condensation is forming on your home’s windows throughout the day, then this is a strong sign that your house is suffering from high levels of humidity.

This is because excess indoor moisture results in the growth of mold in moist areas, such as windows. When cold air touches your home’s windows, condensation will appear and this can result in mould growing on the window frame.

2 - Muggy air

Is the air in your home muggy, sticky, stuffy or just way too hot despite your HVAC system running in overdrive? This is a telltale sign that your home is suffering from a bad case of excess humidity.

This will result in your feeling uncomfortable in your home and having now real respite from the extreme humidity levels that Ontario can suffer from in summer.

3 - Your window frame sealing is defective

Humidity can make its way from outside your home into it. If the sealing around your home’s window frames and door frames is defective then it’s likely that humidity will be creeping its way into your home.

By redoing the sealing and caulking around your home’s fixtures, you’ll be able to prevent the humidity from coming into your home - meaning your cool air will stay in your house and the humid air will stay out.

4 - Your bathroom mirrors are fogging up

Just like your home’s windows, excess indoor moisture will cause your bathroom mirrors to fog up and could even cause mold to grow on your bathroom walls or ceiling. Smaller rooms in your house, such as your bathroom or kitchen, are particularly susceptible to this.

5 - Cracked paint

Likewise, smaller rooms in your house are also likely to suffer from cracked paint on the walls and ceilings if there is excessive indoor moisture. There could also be bulging or peeling wallpaper in your larger rooms.

If you take a closer look you may even find that you see mould growth on your ceiling and walls where the paint is cracking, and this again is a result of the excess humidity that your house is suffering from.

6 - You have poor insulation and your house is drafty

Last but not least, one of the most common reasons that you house is suffering from excess humidity is probably because you have poor insulation. If your insulation isn’t doing it’s job then heat will be coming through your walls and the cold air from your HVAC system will be escaping.

Not only will this result in humidity issues, it also means your HVAC system will be working overtime to try and cool your house down. This will leave you paying significantly higher bills each month.

If you think that insulation may be the issue for higher-than-normal humidity levels in your home, then contact Georgian Insulation today. We can guide you on why your house is experiencing humidity issues and design a plan to stop it.
