3 Ways to Prevent Ice Dams From Damaging Your Home

November 29, 2019

Winter has arrived in Ontario, and with it comes a large amount of snow and ice. This weather isn’t just a minor inconvenience to your life, ice can actually cause severe damage to your house.

Ice damage to your house can include burst pipes and much more, but the most common cause of damage is ice dams forming on your home’s roof. This can be incredibly expensive to fix.

However, by taking some simple steps to safeguard your house from ice damage, you can save yourself time, money and headaches down the line. Before we get into those steps, let’s first take a look at what an ice dam actually is.

What is an ice dam?

When snow or water freezes, melts and then refreezes on your home’s roof it can create an ice dam. As this continues to happen throughout winter, huge icicles and ice dams are formed on your roof and newly melted water is unable to flow anywhere.

These ice dams trap melting snow on your roof, preventing it from running into your gutters and away from your house. This water then leaks into your home, damaging ceilings, walls, insulation, and encouraging the growth of mould and mildew.

In fact, in some serious cases ice dams can cause your roof to collapse. This is incredibly expensive and simply a headache that you don’t want to deal with during the winter months.

How to prevent ice dams from damaging your home

Thankfully, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your home from the damage that ice dams can cause. Georgian Insulation has listed the three most important preventative steps you can take here:

1 - Invest in new insulation

One of the most common causes for the buildup of ice dams on your roof is poor insulation. Heat loss from your house will pass through the ceiling into the attic space, resulting in rising temperatures in your attic to above freezing. The snow on your roof will begin to melt and leak into your house.

If this is a persistent issue at your property, contact an insulation expert today. Proper insulation and ventilation in your attic will prevent ice dams from forming, helping you to save money each winter.

2 - Keep your gutters clear

Cleaning your gutters is one of those boring chores that you put off for as long as possible, but it’s incredibly important during the winter months. During winter, gutters will deposit rain and melted snow away from your home.

Blocked gutters, however, will prevent melted water from running away from your roof - which will then form ice dams. You can avoid this by regularly cleaning debris, tree limbs and autumn leaves from your gutters, ensuring they aren’t blocked.

3 - Clear snow and ice off your roof

Allowing snow and ice to keep building on your roof will only encourage the formation of ice dams. You can remove snow from your roof with a roof rake, but avoid using a regular rake as this can damage your shingles and gutters.
