Should I Remove Old or Damaged Insulation in My Home?

February 3, 2020

If you are thinking about removing the insulation in your home or cottage, then you are already one-step ahead of most homeowners. In fact, most homeowners don’t even give a second thought to the material behind their walls.

Unfortunately, they really should. Over time, insulation will become less effective and get damaged. Since insulation is crucial for keeping outdoor air from entering your home and indoor air from escaping, this can have a huge impact on the temperature of your home.

Insulation ensures that your home is kept warm in the winter and cool in the summer, but poor insulation will dramatically reduce its ability to do that. The result? Your home will be far from efficient and you’ll pay more in energy bills each month, your protection against outside noise will be impacted and mould growth will be hard to stop in your home.

That’s why it’s crucial to remove old and damaged insulation in your house or cottage. Here are just a couple of the key reasons why you should consider removing old insulation in 2020:

Your insulation may have been damaged by wildlife

Have you ever found an unwanted guest living in your attic, or any other location within your home? While most people remove pests without ever checking their insulation, there’s a high chance that wildlife in your home would have damaged your insulation to enter.

Animals such as birds, bats, mice, squirrels and racoons have all been known to damage insulation by moving it around, as well as leave behind urin\e and feces that causes further damage.

If you have found wildlife in your home or cottage, you should remove all your old insulation and replace it with new insulation that will keep your home’s temperature regulated properly.

Your home still uses vermiculite insulation

If your home still uses vermiculite insulation then it’s absolutely essential that you get an insulation expert to remove it immediately. Vermiculite insulation, which was used for many years in Canadian homes, has recently been found to contain low levels of asbestos - which is carcinogenic to humans.

If you suspect that your home may use vermiculite insulation, you should send a sample to an approved laboratory for testing. This sample should be taken by an experienced professional, and, if the test indicates the presence of asbestos, the vermiculite insulation in your home should be removed immediately by a certified specialist.

Why you should always use an insulation professional

If you want to remove old insulation at your home or cottage, you might be tempted to do the job yourself. After all, all you have to do is rip out all of the insulation that’s old and needs replacing, right?

Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Over time insulation degrades and some types of insulation can potentially become dangerous. Not only that, but failure to remove insulation correctly can damage your home, such as the drywall or support studs that surround the insulation.

That’s why you should seek the assistance of an insulation professional when removing insulation.

Insulation professionals possess the training, equipment and protective gear necessary to safely remove the insulation from your home or cottage.

Georgian Insulation Systems, for example, utilizes a 95 hp custom-built, truck-mounted vacuum system to remove all types of old and damaged insulation. The insulation is vacuumed through an 8” hose, and pumped directly into an enclosed disposal container.

This ensures the safety of those residing in your home, and additional hEPA filters can be added to the container in the case that your insulation is hazardous. That insulation is then safely disposed of at a waste recycling facility.
