FAQs: Answering Some of Your Common Home Insulation Questions

February 27, 2020

If you have recently purchased a new home, are looking to increase the value of your current home or want to improve the efficiency of your home’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit, you may be considering updating the insulation in your house.

That’s fantastic news. Over time insulation becomes less effective, so by improving the insulation in your home you will realize a number of benefits. These include ensuring your home is kept warm in the winter and cool in the summer, reducing your monthly energy bills, creating a better sound barrier to outside noises and much more.

Before going ahead with your new home insulation, however, it’s likely that you still have some questions that you want answered. That’s why Georgian Insulation has created a list of some of the most common home insulation questions that we receive:

What type of insulation should I install?

There are a variety of home insulation types and materials, and these all have unique applications for different areas within your home. The most common types of home insulation include:

  • Spray foam

  • Blown cellulose

  • Blow-in-Blanket System (BIBS

The type of insulation that will work best for your home will entirely depend on the specific needs of your property and where in your house the insulation will be installed. By consulting with a home insulation professional, you will get a clear idea of exactly what insulation will work best for you.

What is R-value?

R-value is the measurement of an insulation’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better insulation. Spray foam, such as the Walltite Eco Spray foam, has an aged R-value of approximately 6.5 per inch, enabling it to provide more thermal resistance with less material than any other type of commercial insulation.

Do I need installation in my attic?

It’s a common misconception that insulation isn’t needed in your attic since it’s not one of the main rooms in your house. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Since heat rises, your attic is one of the most likely places where your home is losing heat and letting colder air in. That’s why the attic is one of the most important places in your house to install insulation.

When is the best time to install installation?

There really is no best time to install installation. The quicker you are able to make the investment into new home insulation, the faster you will start realizing significant benefits on your monthly utility bills. Saying that, many people who upgrade their insulation often do it during renovations since they will need insulation for new rooms or walls anyway.

How much ventilation does my home need?

It would be easy to come to the conclusion that the more insulation you put in your home’s walls the more effective it will be. Unfortunately, this isn’t correct. You actually need precisely the right amount of ventilation for your home. Too little insulation and your home won’t be insulated properly, while too much insulation can lead to leaks during harsh weather.

How much does insulation cost?

How much insulating your home costs will depend on a wide range of factors, such as if you need insulation replaced or just installed, the type of insulation that you purchase and how much insulation you need. Insulation is certainly an expensive investment upfront, but the energy savings you earn over its lifetime are invaluable.
